About the work
Whether a seal is any good has less to do with the knife than with how the characters are arranged. The same four characters, crowded together or given room, stamp out with two different tempers. So before the knife comes out we write the characters on paper, and keep redrawing them until they sit right.
What the shop cuts
- Name seals
- For yourself or as a gift. Few characters, so the empty space carries it.
- Company seals
- The pair a business needs to open an account, sign, and file.
- Bank seals
- The one the bank keeps on file. Legible beats beautiful.
- Studio seals
- The seal stamped on a painting. Not a name — a phrase.
- Repairs
- Chipped corners and worn faces can usually be brought back.
Sizes and stone
Faces are usually 12, 15 or 18 mm square, or matched to a seal you already own.
Qingtian and Shoushan stone, ox horn, and boxwood.
Opening hours
Tuesday to Saturday, 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening. Closed Sunday and Monday.
